Wow, its been quite a while since I wrote, and I know that. The reason for that is I've been trying to get all my 'ducks in a row' before reporting back to you guys. A lot of things have gone down since my last post, and I'll be dishing the scoop on most of them now, so expect this to be a long one.
First and foremost, I definitely want to congratulate all of the artists that I endorse. Calista dropped her first hit feature with the Crazy Cousins, Bongo Jam. There were a few different versions of the song that were released, including her own version with a live band, and she also did her thing in the music video. Paperface kept his mixtape game strong, and continuously delivered a combination of great beats and incredible lyrics.
Benflowz came with a duet album with DraMatiQue. It got posted on iTunes and got great reviews across the board, including a review in The Source. Benflowz also just hit the airwaves with his joint Flowmatique off the album, and did an amazing job starting the monthly Zero Hour events in San Francisco. BeatStreets dropped his second remix album with crazy beats over already hot tracks, and the downloads have been going through the roof. A Mo will be releasing his album entitled Mr Doom Dotta on Christmas and D Sloan Da Don has been consistently keeping myspace on the edge of its seat with his tracks.
Everyone on the team has definitely been doing their thing, and I'm proud of each and every one of them. 2009 will be a year of incredible leaps and bounds for each and every one of them. Before I get off the subject of my team, I have been considering new additions to the team; now, I am confidently ready to announce them. Starting January 1st 2009, I will be adding 5 new artists to the roster. The first is a singer that I mentioned way back in my Artistically Armed interview, Scarlett Caldwell. She is a very talented singer out of Southern California that I have had my eye on for months and I know that now is the best time to bring her voice to the world. You can expect an incredible demonstration of her singing skills blasting the radio airwaves, myspace, and the local clubs and parties starting in the second quarter of 2009.
She will also have a single with D Sloan Da Don dropping early 2009. The beat for that same untitled single was created by one of my new producers Mikey McPhly, who is the second addition to my endorsed artists. He is a super diverse, well rounded, and incredibly talented producer.
Expect to hear many of his beats both on the radio, and on new joints all over the place. Another new addition to the squad is the Pandamonium Music Group.
Pandamonium blasts out a hot collection of unique beats the likes of which haven't been heard before, and can be imitated, but never duplicated. As of now I'm attempting to get a collaboration between Pandamonium Music and Block Bizz Ent. In the works. Don't worry, I'll get into Block Bizz a little later on in the post. The first of the two new rap acts I'm working with is U'Kno.
A very talented rapper out of NYC, U'Kno has a great style and serious swag that will no doubt take him to the top of the Billboard charts. He's been on BET, and has an impressive track in which he collaborates with Usher titled Don't Hurt Em,which is already up on his myspace page and will be available for listening on my website when the first update is complete. Last- and for damn sure not least- is a first for me: the Tokyo 24. It is a rap group that I am very close with, and have chosen to endorse after no longer not being able to see past the raw skill and talent that they possess. Regardless of the name, the Tokyo 24 sports 3 members: Ironclad, Duckworth, and Philly P, each of whom had their own unique style and flow on every track that they do together. The group has a very different, but very artistic new wave feel to their music that has yet to be heard among the mainstream or underground crowd to date. The Tokyo 24 will drop their first mixtape in the first quarter of 2009 with a little production from yours truly, DJ Storm.
Now, all of my new endorsed artists are not named on my website JUST yet, but after the first update, you will be able to get a bio, and a 4 track sample from all 5 of the new artists I'm working with in the 09 year. Before I get into my own accomplishments in 2008, I have to say I've really and truly had an incredible boost in everything, and from the bottom of my heart I thank all those who were involved in my success. Here go my 2008 shout-outs. You know who you are, and you all know there's no way I could have done it without you.
So much can happen in two weeks. Every time I post, I always have new projects to work on, but for some reason it seems like these past two weeks have been something crazy. I know I've said it a billion times, and I'm going to keep saying it until its untrue, but every time my entertainment career takes off, my personal life goes to shit. It never fails, and the reason I haven't been able to post as quickly as I wanted to was because of some problems I've been having to deal with.
As a result, (I'm not sure if it'll happen for certain), but I may have to fly back home pretty soon. Fear not though, even if I did, I have a few projects up my sleeve I'm going to set in motion first. Right now I'm one artist away from my goal of 9 endorsed artists. So far I'm working with (in addition to my original six) Scarlett Caldwell and U'Kno. I have a few other artists in mind but I have to choose very wisely when it comes to people I'm going to surround myself with, and I intend to make that decision pretty soon. Next up, I've got two real big projects I'm trying to get done as soon as possible.
As you may have read before, thanks to Hayden, I was thinking about different ways to give back to the community I live in, and do something positive. I've chosen to help set up a non-violence seminar at the Academy of Art featuring KRS-1. Its open to the public at a price of $10, and its free for Academy Students.
The date is set for Friday, Nov. The doors will open at 6, and KRS will begin at 7. Between 6 and 7, the venue will be an art gallery featuring pieces by Reginald Sylvester, Rodney Young, Stephanie Balistreri, Jared Lee, and a few other equally talented illustrators and photographers. As expected will be spinning while the art is on display, and Benflowz and I will be hosting the lecture and the discussion between KRS-1 and the crowd. Once again it's taking place at 531 Post Street, on the corner of Post and Mason, Nov.
21st, at 6 p.m. The next big project that I'm working to pull together is a concert at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA. I'm trying to get both The Cool Kids, and Asher Roth to headline the show. Other artists I'm hoping to involve in the project are Benflowz, Scarlett Caldwell, and some outside help producing the show from Dreamscheme Productions, Subtle Detail and Ultra Vitalence.
I've never worked at Catalyst, even though I've tried to set up some events with Benflowz and The Wu-Tang Clan in the past. So I'm real anxious to get to make something happen at such a great concert hall. But once again, this is still un-official. I have yet to hear from Asher Roth's people about booking, and The Cool Kids are on tour with Q-Tip until December. This means that this even probably wont come to pass until late January, early February. Last time, I already reported on the black light party and how sick that is going to be, but this week I've been put on something that might just be a little sicker. A good friend of mine Stephanie Balistreri, who's work will be featured in the gallery on November 20th helped set some major things in motion over at the Academy of Art.
She started up, (and currently holds the position of president of) the Sigma Lambda Rho sorority at the Academy. The Academy has already has a fraternity, and in light of that, many other girls have tried to set up their own sororities and failed. She managed set all this up in her first semester of college, and I definitely respect her hustle.
Subsequently, Stephanie and the Sigmas are having their first event on Friday, November 21st. At 655 Sutter St. In downtown San Francisco.
The party starts at 9 p.m. And its only $3 to get in. Now, I know alot of people who have trouble with the idea of paying to get into a party, but if you can't come up wit 3 DOLLARS, you don't deserve to be in the party.
That being said, I do not want to hear anyone asking me if I can get them in for free. Its a stop light party (for those of you who don't know what that is, its Red for 'taken', Yellow for 'proceed with caution' and green is 'single') It's going to be one to remember.
As for the past tense. Zero Hour was amazing this time around, it was both better than we could have hoped for, and better than the first one.
The ladies night went over really well, all the performers were great, and Suki Lee even had her own male backup dancers. So it was a great night that ran till about 4:30, and regardless of a few major technical difficulties, it was a success. And before I go, I gotta give a shout to Ironclad, Phillie Lemonade, and Duckworth. Tokyo 24 has been getting alot of well deserved shine. A lot has gone on over the last few weeks, which is what I'm going to use as my excuse as to why its taken me a little longer than usual to post. First and foremost, I want to take this time to shout out the accomplishments of one of my endorsed artists.
Beatstreets, the Berkley producer who I've known for quite a few years has put out a new mix album titled Re-Compilation Vol. Its available for download at The album features tracks all remixed by Beatstreets, put out by Kanye West, Kelis, Missy Elliot, and many others. Its definitely something much worth the download, and its an album you can chill and listen to over and over again. He will also make a quick cameo in a music video premiering on MTV very soon, and I'll be giving everyone the information about that very soon.
In other Beatstreets news, he will be on the ballot for house DJ for the next Zero Hour event taking place on November 7th. You can contact either me at or Benflowz at about the details for that party. Next up is the return of the Black Light Party. We have rebuilt it, we have made it longer, and stronger than it ever could have been before. As apposed to being set up by a few college kids just wanting to party, this year, the party is being hosted by Above Ground Productions, sponsored by Insight Magazine, and featuring music by yours truly, DJ Storm.
We've also replaced the Y in the title with a 2. The Black Light Part2 will be going down on November 8th, 2008, at 655 Sutter St. In downtown San Francisco (same location as last year) starting at 8 p.m. And ending at 2 a.m. The first Black Light Party was a very special night for me for many reasons, and I look forward to doing the best as I can, as a professional, as an entertainer, and as a DJ to make that party the best it can be for everyone.
And I hope that any reader that can make it to that party, do their best to be there. Now, I get to the reason for the title of this post. As many may have heard, I recently struck a production deal with Apple for a series of applications for the iPhone and for the iPod Touch.
These will be a set of music based applications that you can use to do quite a few things that were never possible for the iPhone and iPod Touch before. With all the readers I have on this blog, I cant give out every single detail surrounding my deal with Apple, but what I can say is much like how Jordan has his own line of sneakers from Nike, will be how I will have my own set of applications on the App Store available for download. Now, seeing as how I barley managed to strike such a monumental deal with such a large company, there are many people who might try to take my ideas and sell them to Apple as well, and say they came up with it first. So i can't say exactly specify the functionality of the applications, but what I can say is that the name DJ Storm will appear on all of them, and they will start dropping hopefully sometime early in 2009. Aside from working with Apple, one thing I've been excited about for a while, that I'm very sorry to say will not come to pass. The Hip-Hop Halloween Celebration will NOT be going down on Nov.
1st at Club Asia in Planet Hollywood on the Las Vegas strip. I had been planning to stay at the El Cortez hotel on the strip with Reginald Sylvester, (member of the 24 Karat Club, and CEO of the Subtle Detail clothing company) and Matt Pinna (club promoter and business partner). I would have been back home the next day, and even though this was to be a very short trip, it was going to be an amazing concert featuring Benflowz, Killah Preist, and Kung-Fu Vampire.
There are multiple reasons for the cancellation of the event, but for the sake of not pissing anyone that pays me off. I'll keep quiet about it. Needless to say I am extremely disappointed. One thing I am starting to get myself into now is charity. One thing I was not aware of was that Lil Wayne has his own charity, and T.I has his own charity, and they have been helping their communities for years. I looked into some work Hayden Panettiere was doing to save pilot whales (a cousin in the dolphin family) from Japanese fishers.
Her charity can be looked up at and I think personally that she's doing a great job with the way she's choosing to put her ideas of what is right and what is wrong into action. I've gotten in touch with her to let her know that I'm going to use my public influence in San Francisco to help her cause, and I've also asked her how she went about organizing this initiative. The reason I asked her how she set it up, (with myspace, and with savethewhalesagain.org) is because this whole thing has made me think of what I can do as an entertainer to help out others as well. To me personally, all the money, and all the popularity doesn't mean as much is your the only person that benefits from it. There are several things I'd like to do with my influence and my money to help out other people, but with advice from her and from a few other people, I'll sit down, evaluate my options and decide what I want to do to help those who are less fortunate, and how I want to do it. There's a first time for everything, and this week is a week for many different firsts. And this blog is the first (and maybe the last time) that I will do a few things I said I'd never do.
First and foremost, before all that I want to say congratulations to Calista who made it into her first music video with the Crazy Cousins on the track 'Bongo Jam'. I'm real proud to see her doing her thing, and making it up to where she's made it. The video is hilarious, and you can check it out at in all its glory. For those of you who have never seen my endorsed artists page, Calista was one the first artists that I put on the page, and one of the first to talk to me about working together.
So watch the video, enjoy it, and expect much more from Calista in the future. Next up, is the first time I've recognized one single event for helping my career more than any other. About one year ago I had been spinning all over the place for a long time, and one event jump started my career from where it was then to where it is now.
The Alba Party was really the event that got me from 1st gear to 5 th gear in terms of how fast I was moving, so I just want to take the time to recognize the event. And with that, I cant go without mentioning the person who inspired that party. Just like the party that honored her, she too has changed my life so much in the last year, and for the better.
So i just wanted to point that out. (You can also find pictures from The Alba Party on or on my myspace). Moving right along, this week I've got some work to do in the 'establishing new artists' department.
I'm set for a Chris Boutros photo shoot on late in the week with Scarlett Caldwell, who happens to be one of my newest endorsed artists. I'm also in talks with Kelly Portis (Dash Productions) to produce a track for her very soon that we're hoping to get into the clubs. Scarlett is also slated to feature on A.Mo's sophomore album coming this winter.
So expect some new media coming out of some new artists very soon. In other news, the Zero Hour party was a total success. As planned, we rocked from 12 till about 6:30 in the morning. It was a daunting job, but it turned out well.
For the first time I was able to mix the Top 40's style music of the clubs I'm used to playing in, with the old school classic hip hop that I usually listen to in my spare time, so that was something I really enjoyed. Benflowz also got onto the tables and did his thing for the last hour of the party, and we got to hear some new tracks from a few very talented underground artists which was a great experience. Next month we are definitely hoping to have the same or better turn out for the party, and we're going to switch things up a little bit. I can say that even though I will NOT be spinning the next Zero Hour party, I know who will be, and it will be just as good as the premiere Zero Hour party. Another first for me coming up soon is working indirectly with family. Any artist I choose to work with, I try not to have too deep of a pre-existing connection with.
Its not fair to the other artists I am involved with simply because you naturally look out for family first. In a business setting, and especially in the entertainment business, you have to look at talent, saleability, and personality.

Those views become skewed when your working with someone you've been best friends with for 5 years. In most cases you would want to meet an artist, and form a good reppour and business relationship, that should eventually develop into a friendship.
And from that friendship and that partnership, the two of you make appropriate decisions on how to benefit all parties involved. Now don't get me wrong I TRY not work with too many people I have been friends with for years, but I cant always follow the rules to a T. Paperface has been a good friend of mine for many years, we grew up just around the block from each other, and he is responsible for teaching me a lot of the things I know now about the game.
But I know that I cant give him more opportunities than my other artists JUST because we grew up together. Keeping that general desire to help my own people out more than anyone else is hard enough, but the situation I'm choosing to put myself in now will be a little more unique. My sister, who also happens to be a singer and a poet that goes by alias Philosophee, has been doing her thing for quite some time. If I were to work with and endorse my own sister, that would be an enormous conflict of interest, so I would never do that (out of respect for the other rappers, singers, and producers that I work with) The same thing goes for a girlfriend, significant other, or family member that has their foot in the music industry.
One thing I never contemplated having to do was working with the significant other of a family member. (Another things I have never done is talk about my personal life or the personal life of anyone else in this blog, but it's about to happen.) My sister is dating an emcee who has been on his grind for quite some time, and has been doing quite well for himself. He has managed to push his way into the mainstream scene little by little, and I'm hoping to get a chance to work with him, and endorse his music. I personally feel that it would be beneficial to both of us. For me because it gives me a wider range of artists. I have artists on the east coast, and the west coast, and in the UK, but I do not have different types of artists in all these areas, and it would be a good thing for me to be able to have many different artists in many different areas. Also, since he has already managed to do his own thing for so long without even knowing who I am, he has the potential to help me out with introducing me to his people, and giving me different and better business connections.
The same thing goes for him. With a DJ willing to endorse his music on the west coast, his music can spread much quicker, and if more people in more places are familiar with your material, the easier it is to become a substantial entity in this business. (Which is essentially what all of us want) The down side to this is, if things go awry with him and my sister, this will drastically effect the business relationship between the two of us, which is bad news bears. Basing a business relationship between you and an artist on the personal relationship of that artist and someone else is very risky business.
But it is something I'm willing to do because I feel that the benefits will out-weigh the risks, and because I'm being very trusting in this situation. Which is never the case for the guys who date my sister. (Sorry for airing you out light that Chris) The next 'first' I want to talk about is Las Vegas. I've been there before, and had a great time before, but I've never done a show there before. As the time for the trip draws near, I'm actually starting to get nervous. Not because I feel like something will go wrong, its just that this performance has been hyped up for so long I'm starting to get stage freight.
Which is a first. The traveling package for Vegas has been closed, so unfortunately anyone who was thinking about coming along that hasn't already gotten tickets is out of luck. (You'll have to wait for the DVD).

Moving right along, for the first time in my career, not having a manager is starting to catch up with me. I've got quite a few jobs lined up from now till the end of the year, but not as many as I'd like to have. This is putting me in a place where I have to take the position of a manager. I've gotta search DJ sites for jobs, think about taking residencies in clubs (working the same day every week for a steady pay check), and even checking craigslist for postings about people who need DJ's. For one, I now see how much the job of a manager sucks, and more importantly, it makes me look forward to January when I get my representation back. Sorry I'm a few days late. Not going to lie, I wasted a few days watching my boys play 'The Force Unleashed' (the new Star Wars game where Darth Vader teaches an apprentice how to be just as bad-ass as him).
If you think I'm a nerd, go find someone with that game and watch them play, its pretty entertaining. Anyways, coincidentally I happen to doing something very similar right now. A friend of mine stood behind the booth while I spun a party last week Saturday, and expressed some interest in being taught the skills and learning the game. After I let her know how much hard work and practice has to be put into the job, she assured me that she was down for it, and we're moving on from there. Personally I never thought I'd be in this position so soon, but I still welcome it. I'll easily admit that I still have some things to learn when it comes to my trade, and they say the best way to learn is by teaching.
So hopefully I can learn a few things from my apprentice as she learns from me. The entire deal has yet to be fully worked out, so I wont say too much too soon, but if you peep a 6 foot red-headed white girl chilling behind the booth with me at the next party. I'm Darth Vader and she's the Apprentice. In the department of up coming events, my brothers and I have started to get things ready for our much delayed trip to Japan. (Tokyo 24!) Even though that still won't be until winter, I still feel like its important to mention, because its work related, and something I've been looking forward to for some time. But in terms of things coming up in the immediate future. Finally the Zero Hour Party is this Friday.
I'm defiantly excited for this event for many reasons. Normally when I set up my own events, I do have help, but this is the first time me and one of my endorsed artists (Benflowz) will be setting up shop and tearing it down together. There might be a few special guests in the house, might be a few performances, might be a few other surprises, but it will undoubtedly be a very special night.
(And for all of you who think its real cool to show up 'fashionably late' at 1 a.m. Right before the party gets shut down. Your in luck. This party starts at 12 a.m. And ends at 6 a.m.) If you want any information about the party, just hit me up on www.djstorm.com and I'll gladly hit you up about tickets and all that. Had a few interesting experiences this weekend.
Spun a house party just outside of downtown San Francisco on Friday night, and was having some severe technical difficulties throughout the night, but did the best I could to keep the party going until it got shut down. It didn't make the situation any better when people kept stepping on my cables, and pulling plugs out of the wall, but I got some help from a few unexpected sources. Normally I have the rest of the 24K team with me to help avoid situations where people are too close to my equipment, but due to an honest misunderstanding, my brothers weren't around at the time. So about 5 minutes after the first time the music cut out and I had to yell at everyone to get back, I heard a female voice telling people to watch out and to step back. Now normally girls can be a pain in the ass at house parties (if your a DJ) because they do the exact opposite of what you ask them to do. Tell a girl to get on the dance floor, she goes to get a drink (then asks you to play the same song over again because she 'missed it').
Ask a girl not to put drinks on the same table as the DJ equipment, they put the drink down, walk away, and don't come back. Tell a girl to back up from the tables, she grabs a guy and starts grinding against the speakers. So naturally I was pleasantly surprised to see some girl I didn't know doing what she could to help me out. The next chance I got, I went over to say thank you and gave her a few special requests in return. Later on, I met her and her people, and made some new friends at the party that helped make the night go by a little easier. So I just want to publicly say thank you to Lindsay, Katy, Katlin, Ashley, and Tatum for kickin it with me at that house party and helping me out. The house party on Friday night was hosted by the Above Ground crew, and I have to give a special thanks to them.
I'm hearing buzz about a few things coming up from them that I'd be hyped to be a part of. So expect a few more Above Ground x DJ Storm parties coming up.
And speaking of up coming (and still unconfirmed events). The Kappa Sigma Halloween party is an event I've been waiting to spin for the last 3 years. I've been hearing rumors here and there that there will be a rooftop event, but like I said, nothing is confirmed, so I'm not at liberty to say anything right now. Except that I'll be excited if I get to be a part of it. Halloween will be super busy for me regardless of what I get into on Halloween night, I have to get on an early morning flight to Las Vegas the next morning for the Killah Priest/Benflowz/Kung-Fu V show on November 1st.
So hopefully I'll get to spin a party I've been waiting to get a piece of for the last few years followed by a mind blowing show in Sin City the very next night. But we'll see how it goes. I went from trying to post once a week to almost posting once a month, and for that I apologise.
Things have been getting real hectic with work and with gearing up for school. Not to mention that the people in my life seem to be needing a lot more attention than usual now a days, so I've been dealing with that as well. Another thing that has been setting me back is djstorm.com is temporarily down. I'm trying to add some new content, some new picture, some new music, things like that, and it's taking a little longer than expected. I did have quite a few interesting gigs go down in the last month. The first off was a real predicament.
The Academy of Art University has an annual boat party, and I've attended the party quite a few times. This time I was hired to spin, so I was defiantly excited. There were a lot of issues with waiting on people, and getting everyone together before the party, and I ended up arriving late. So there's a line of about 200 people outside the boat, and a few people started clapping when they saw me. (Not because they liked me, but because they were tired of waiting outside the boat). It was a bumpy start while I was getting used to it, a few botched transitions, and some volume issues, but I managed to get the hang of it before all the students got onto the boat, and 2 hours into it the lights were off, and it was so packed with people dancing I couldn't see the back of the room.
One song I was real proud of was a transition I pulled off between 'Got Money' by Lil Wayne ft. T-Pain and A Millie by Lil Wayne. Only reason I say I'm proud of it is because it would be relatively difficult using vinyl, and almost impossible on 'Internal' mode, but I pulled it off without a hitch. By the end of the party I had people thanking me as they walked out, so I as stressful as work can be, I was quite happy with the way things turned out. The very next day, I had to spin a house party in downtown San Francisco. They had me in an 'Almost Famous' position, spinning from the roof of the apartment.
It was a little risky, but I thought the idea was cool based on the layout of the apartment. But very soon we ran into some issues with the entire neighborhood being able to hear the music.
And as anyone who's ever been to a good house party knows, loud music = complaints. Complaints = cops. Cops = the end of the party. So I eventually moved all my equipment inside the party, set up again, and started spinning, using the home entertainment system speakers as the house speakers. Things went real well, we had about 200 people both inside and outside in the back yard where the drinks were.
One issue I had was with people bumping the equipment. Every two seconds I'd catch a 'Boo!' From a few people cause the record skips. So my apologies. I was just under the impression it was common knowledge that if you bump the DJ table, the music skips.
I thought people learned that early in life. But I guess you CAN have completed 12 years in school, and 21 or 22 years of life, and NOT know that if you knock into the table, the music might skip. Another problem I ran into that I didn't expect to, was the DJ helping me out. He is a budding DJ, and happens to double as one of my endorsed artists. He played some of his mixes in the party to give me a little break. But 10 minutes into his set people starting asking me to go back on.
It was an interesting insight into the taste of the crowd, and it further pushed the notion that just because you can pick songs off a play list, doesn't make you a DJ. (A word of wisdom to anyone who thinks my job and the job of any other DJ is easy). If there are any readers who went the Sutter house party on Saturday the 13 th in San Francisco, I have some good news. I was just slated to spin another party on Sutter on the 20 th. And this one will be at a bar (formerly known as the 'Who's Your Daddy'). So spread the word.
In terms of other moves I will be making soon, I regret to inform anyone who was excited about it. The Canibus concert has been pushed back to a later date. But I will be in Las Vegas for a gig on November 1st. I will also be resident DJ for the Zero Hour party going down on October 3rd. There is also a limited guest list for this event, so you can look up information at dreamschemeproductions.com/zerohour and I will be posting up information about it all over the place until the event. Ok, first off, I have to apologize for taking a 3 week break from writing. Since the launch of the site, I've been running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to keep things under control, and on track.
I have always been a huge believer in not biting off more than you can chew professionally, so I have to keep that in mind along with not burning bridges. If someone offers you a job and you turn them down, some people CAN get pissed off, so you have to do it the right way, so you are sure you will still get offers from them in the future.
My choices for which jobs to take now, are based on who else I will be working with that night, ( DJ's, performers, promoters, etc.) the size of the venue, time and date, the amount of exposure I stand to gain, and of course. If all those things are right, I'll take the job without hesitation, no matter where it may be. Now, on the subject of where I may have to be, I think it would be interesting to note that I'm writing this from 30,000 feet in the air.
I'm currently on a flight to Atlanta, where I'll be for the next few days before returning home to the bay, only to fly out to Salt Lake City a few days later. Now I know the title of this blog may be a little strange, and I know I never explain the titles of any of the others, but this is one I'm sure people who don't know me personally will find somewhat amusing, and some of my friends will all find hilarious. Small air crafts have a worse safety record than larger ones, so whenever I have the choice, (or I'm funding my own travel) I do what I can to get on the largest plane I can. For some odd reason, I don't necessarily fear electrical fires anymore, but it's turbulence that scares me the most when I'm flying. Now-a-days, as soon as the 'Fasten Seatbelt' sign comes on, I start sweating like Patrick Ewing in the 4 th quarter.
And, it's very true that larger air crafts are also less susceptible to turbulence. This is why I avoid private flights when at all possible.
Don't get me wrong, someone flying you out in a chartered jet is an amazing experience, but I'd rather live in coach than die in style. Moving right along to the good stuff. I'm not able to talk about every single offer I've gotten since the site debuted, because not all of them are official yet. They are still in the works, so some details may change, or they may even get cancelled all together.
Plus, I've already mentioned in past posts, a lot of upcoming events in the near future. I can't take the time to go back and talk about ALL of them all over again, so just take a little time if you're curious and read the previous posts to see what else is coming up that I haven't mentioned in this post.
After that is the biggest one yet. Canibus's management team came to Benflowz about a show in the bay area, naturally with Canibus being the caliber of artist he is, Ben jumped at the chance and subsequently asked me to jump on board as his DJ, and the DJ for the club that night.
The conversation we had about that wasn't even really Benflowz asking if I'd do it, it was more like 'We got a show with Canibus on the 30 th. Sick isn't it?'
So he knew I'd definitely be down. For those of you who have been living in a hip-hop-proof bubble, and DON'T know who Canibus is, I pity you. You should come to the show and find out.
He's not the most mainstream rapper by any means, but those who have listened to true hip-hop from the days of it's roots until now, could never say they haven't heard his lyrics. He was and still is one of the most lyrically talented emcee's on the planet.
His style and rhyme-scheme were both VERY ahead of their time in the mid to late 90's. It has always been said that you know how important you are based on who DOESN'T like you. Well, Canibus has gotten into rap beefs with such legends as LL Cool J, and my own personal favorite lyricist, Eminem. And when beef is truly about your lyrical content, for you to stand up to Eminem is a pretty big sign of how talented you have to be for him to even respond to you. Another reason the Canibus show is slated to be a big one for me is because the artist known as Philosiphee MAY be in the building that night.
Now, Philosiphee may not be as big of a name as Canibus, Eminem, Benflowz or LL Cool J yet, but she is an extremely talented east coast performer, singer and actress. Who also happens to be my big sister. Even though I have flown her out to the bay before, she's never attended a concert I've been spinning at, so this will definitely be a first if all the pieces fall into place.
Even though I do have a few interesting things place for the future, I gotta mention one event I was so disappointed I had to pass on. I got an offer very recently (and very late notice), for the Vans Warped Tour. Unfortunately, I had to take a pass on it.
My travel plans where already set, and I wasn't the one who paid for the flight so it would've been very unprofessional to cancel like that (and like I already said, it's very unwise to burn bridges like that). Along with the cancellation issue, I'm also planning to stay with family during my time in the A, and I truly believe you should always put family first. So I didn't want to disappoint by not showing, even though the Warped Tour would have been amazing, and a great look on my resume.
